ABSTRACT
Based on her many years of teaching and consulting in the field of professional ethics, Professor Claire Stiles will focus her presentation on how to develop into a competent professional in the social services and in public administration. The significant role of personal values, character, and professional codes of ethics in supporting good practice will be highlighted. The risks of corruption and abuse of authority will also be addressed. Furthermore, Professor Stiles will introduce the concepts of ethical awareness, values identification, analysis, ethical decision making, and moral courage as skills needed for “ethical fitness” in the professions.

Claire A. Stiles, Ph.D., Professor of Human Development, received her Ph.D. in Mental Health Counseling at the University of Florida in 1987. She has served as both a college counselor and full-time faculty member, and has taught in the Human Development discipline at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida, a private, liberal arts college, since 1977. Dr. Stiles has served as the Chairperson of the Ethics Committees of both the American College Health Association and the Society of Prospective Medicine and as a consultant to the National Coalition of Health Education Organizations for rewriting a Code of Ethics. Dr. Stiles yearly teaches a course on Ethical Issues in Human Development for undergraduate students entering the helping professions. Professor Stiles also has an interest in East Asian Philosophy and Culture, especially as it relates to health and alternative healing.
